Our Mission
Our mission, as a company, is to improve social interactions for individuals who fall somewhere along the autism spectrum. By communicating social likes and dislikes in a fun and fashionable way, we are hoping to make social interactions easier, more comfortable and encourage more communication.
The creation of our company was inspired by our daughter, who like many, is challenged with autism. We have witnessed her in social interactions with friends, classmates and teachers, teammates, even family members; constantly on edge watching to see if these moments were going to go smoothly or end in tears of anger, frustration and sadness. She would often say to us, “Life is so hard on the spectrum. It’s like I’m mouthing words to people who don’t hear me. The only one who can hear me is me.” We felt helpless and prayed for a way to be able to help her and others who are on the autism spectrum.
We would love for Simply on the Spectrum® apparel to help you start your unique conversation! Check out our selections here.
So, what’s the deal with the jellies?
For our daughter, jellyfish quickly became her area of special and extreme interest. Special interests are quite common among individuals living with autism. Reading, learning and thinking about jellyfish has become her way to relax and relieve the stress she feels dealing with daily social interactions. In her own words, “I love jellyfish because they are other worldly creatures, but they are still beautiful. They have their own little world that no one else knows or understands. It is an alien world that they are happy with; where they can just be jellies.” That is the driving force behind her artistry, helping to make her world, and the world of others living with autism, known and understood.
“Simply on the Spectrum® because we are all more than just one word.”
Through the eyes of our daughter, we have come to appreciate the beauty, complexity and gentleness of jellyfish. Contrary to their name, jellyfish are not fish at all. How about that for being misunderstood? The same is true of those living with autism. One word cannot begin to describe all the amazing personalities, passions and strengths of these individuals. It is our hope that Simply on the Spectrum®, serves as a reminder that we are all more than just one word.
